Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) announced that it will purchase 355,000 tons of wheat from Saudi companies investing abroad.

This is within the framework of the invitation that was recently allocated to Saudi investors abroad, which represents about 10% of the Kingdom's total annual consumption, in implementation of the Cabinet decision issued in this regard.

Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, and SAGO chairman, Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al Fadhli, explained that the aforementioned amount was awarded to Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Co. (SALIC), wholly-owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), through its investments in many countries in the grain cultivation field, which represents a quantum leap for the company.

The overseas agricultural investment program represents one of the Kingdom's food security strategy programs, which aims to diversify and increase sources of foreign food supplies, Al Fadhli said, urging Saudi investors to apply to qualify in order to ensure the participation of the largest possible number of Saudi investors.

The quantity that has been awarded will be supplied during the period from May - December 2021, according to the approved quality specifications of imported wheat.

The minister indicated that the shipments contracted by SAGO branches will be received in various ports of the Kingdom, including Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, Jizan, and Yanbu Commercial.

SAGO succeeded in diversifying the wheat procurement sources, as it targets to purchase a maximum of about 1.5 million tons of local wheat, in implementation of the Cabinet decision issued in this regard to stop the cultivation of green fodder.

According to the Cabinet regulations, SAGO will purchase the wheat crops from farmers for a period of five years, if they choose to grow wheat instead of green fodder. In addition, SAGO will import the remaining needs from the global markets through the offered tenders.
