Tourism characteristic activities revenue up 71% to SAR 213.3 bln in 2021

The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) revealed that operating revenue from tourism characteristic activities rose 71% year-on-year (YoY) in 2021 to SAR 213.3 billion.

 

The COVID pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020 and 2021, with its repercussions affecting the travel and tourism sectors worldwide.

 

Revenue from all tourism characteristic activities edged higher in 2021. Visitor accommodation accounted for 33.2% of the total, while revenue from the food and beverage (F&B) activity represented 29.9%, according to data from tourism establishments.

The number of workers in tourism characteristic activities amounted to 767,820 in 2021, led by those in F&B which exceeded 67% of the total. Visitor accommodation activity followed with more than 13%.

 

Saudis accounted for roughly 27% of the above workers in 2021. Males represented about 58.1%, while females accounted for the remainder.

 

The occupancy rate of hotel rooms came in at 42.1% for 2021. December was the most active month in terms of occupancy at 53.3%, while the annual occupancy rate for furnished residential units for the year amounted to 49.3%.

 

The highest monthly occupancy rate for furnished residential units was in June at 55%, according to administrative records data issued by the Ministry of Tourism.

Statistics showed that the total compensation of tourism characteristic activities workers stood at nearly SAR 32 billion, an increase of 22.7% YoY.
