POS transactions hit SAR 8.8 bln in week ending Jan. 22: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions amounted to SAR 8.77 billion in the week ending Jan. 22, 2022, compared to SAR 9.51 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 111.5 million transactions were processed.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using their ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors recorded a decline in POS transactions during the week, excluding recreation & culture, clothes and footwear, and education that rose by 3%, 7% and 196%, respectively.
The hotels sector led decliners, with a drop of 40%. It was followed by the jewelry and fuel stations that fell by 24% and 20%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.28 billion, followed by the restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.2 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 78.2 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.41 billion.
