US crude oil inventories retreated more than expected in the week ended March 8, with gasoline inventories also plummeting for the sixth straight week during the same period.

Crude oil fell for the sixth week in a row, shedding 1.5 million barrels last week, surpassing expectations of a 1.2-million-barrel drop, data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed.

Meanwhile, distillate stocks, which include diesel and heating oil, increased by about 900,000 barrels, contrary to forecasts for a 600,000-barrel slump.
